There are a wide variety of nutrition bars on the market today. While many products focus on specific niches such as energy bars for weight lifters and endurance athletes or diet bars for those who are weight conscious, many of these products are loaded with high contents of carbohydrates and sugar. While no bar, energy, diet, or nutrition, should be confused as a complete substitute for whole foods, some bars do provide a stronger balance of supplements and nutrients than others.
Many of the “power” type of energy bars do provide a high amount of protein and vitamins, but also contain a very high content of carbohydrates and sugar. For instance the MET-Rx Cookie Dough Bar contains 360 calories, 27 g protein, 51 g carbohydrates, and 26 g of sugar and the Cliff Bar made with organic oats and soybean contains 250 calories, 10 g protein, 45 g carbohydrates and 21 g sugar.
Other bars on the market have fewer grams of sugar but also fewer grams of protein. The Nutribar by Stella Pharmaceutical contains 250 calories, 8 g of sugar, 32 g of carbohydrates, and only 13 g of protein. In addition, the Gnu Foods Flavor and Fiber Cinnamon & Raisin bar has 130 calories, but only 4 g protein, and the nut-crunchy Jocalat Chocolate bar from Larabar has 190 calories but only 5 g of protein.
The two best nutrition bars on the market today, in terms of the amount of protein, carbohydrates and the sugar, are the Solid Protein bar by Nature's Best, which has 270 calories, 30 g protein, 28 g carbohydrates, and only 3 grams of sugar and the Source One bar by MET-Rx, which has 190 calories, 15 g protein, 30 g carbohydrates and only 4 grams sugar.
