Benefits of Green Tea

Green tea has gained popularity in the past few years as more and more health benefits are being revealed. While there has been many health benefits connected to drinking green tea, there are studies that suggest that the correlation between good health and green tea has been exaggerated. However, other studies do support the fact that drinking green tea can improve your overall health.

Green tea is one of the three main varieties of tea. Green tea is made from unfermented leaves and contains the highest amounts of polyphenols. Polyphenols are an antioxidant that helps to neutralize the damaging free radicals in the body. In addition, green tea is believed to help lower total cholesterol and raise the good (HDL) cholesterol. One study suggests that the polyphenols in green tea helps the intestine to block cholesterol and help to eliminate it from the body. Green tea has been used for years to help control blood sugar. This means that it may help to prevent type one diabetes or at least slow its progression once it has developed.

Cancer rates are lower in countries that consume large amounts of green tea, such as Japan. However, there are no studies that can prove that drinking green tea prevents cancer exactly. Studies do suggest that the polyphenols in green tea do play a part in preventing cancer. In addition, researchers believe that polyphenols might help slow the progression of cancerous cells and even kill some of them. Finally, there are clinical trials that suggest that green tea may also increase metabolism. With all these potential benefits, it comes as no surprise that green tea is getting more popular each day.
