Benefits of Coffee

Did you ever hear someone tell a child they shouldn't drink coffee because it would turn their toes black? Many may have believed that and so were afraid to drink coffee. Later studies find that coffee may have many benefits for avid coffee drinkers. The more you exercise the more benefit you get form that cup of coffee you drank at breakfast, athletes are able to work harder and longer.

Coffee has a lot of antioxidants and a compound called quinines. When coffee was given to rats it increased their insulin sensitivity and this enhances the body's use of insulin. In addition to the insulin sensitivity, other components in coffee improve glucose metabolism, these being chorogenic acid, tocopherols, and magnesium. Also trigonelline has antibiotic and anti-adhesive properties that help prevent dental cavities.

Studies have shown that coffee may give some protection against Parkinson's Disease and Alzheimer's. The reason being that the coffee's antioxidant properties interact with the brain cells. Both the Alzheimer's Society and The Parkinson's Foundation say there needs to be further research done on the subject.

Studies also show the risk of type 2 diabetes is lower in regular coffee drinkers than those who don't drink coffee at all, and research has determined that there is no harm in drinking coffee in moderation, not even black toes. You may reduce your risk of gall stones, colon cancer, and liver damage in those who are disposed to have liver damage.

Coffee can improve cognitive function. If you drink a large mug of coffee for breakfast, spread it out over the day with 3 ounces every hour you may find your endurance improve. Negative effects arise when coffee consumption is excessive, so just as with alcohol, avoid heavy consumption.
